FAQs

Why is Sugaring better than waxing?

Sugaring does not stick to live skin cells the same way wax does. Sugar paste is made of sugar, lemon juice, and water, unlike the chemical resins that wax is made of. Sugaring can get much shorter hairs than wax, and because it removes the hair in the direction it goes, there is no chance of breaking the hair, like wax does. Sugaring is CONSIDERABLY less painful and more sanitary than waxing. One ball of sugar is used for your entire service and then disposed of, there is no chance of double dipping. Results last longer than waxing, because we ALWAYS remove the hair and cuticle, from the root. Waxing often breaks the hair at the surface, so it appears to “grow back sooner.

What is the Sugaring process like?

We perform the ancient Egyptian hand sugaring technique. Before we sugar, we will cleanse your skin with witch hazel, to remove oils or residual makeup. Next, we use a gloved hand to remove a small amount of the sugaring paste. That paste is used for the entire service. No strips are used. Sugaring is a more fluid technique than waxing. It’s a constant motion of molding the sugar paste onto your skin, and then flicking it off. Sugar Paste is water soluble, so it will not leave any residue. We simply wipe off any residue with a warm wet towel and apply an after care soothing oil.

How long should the hair be?

Sugaring will remove hairs that are shorter than the length required for waxing, but it does require length. Approximately 1/8 of an inch, on average, is enough to remove the hair. Allow at least one week of growth. DO NOT SHAVE THE DAY BEFORE and expect us to be able to sugar you. You have to have hair, for it to be pulled out. Everyone’s hair is rooted differently, but, especially on your first visit, more is better than not enough. We can trim if necessary, when you arrive.

What if I have sensitive skin?

You’re in luck! Sugar paste does not adhere to live skin cells, so there is no chance of ripping or tearing the skin. Your skin will be exfoliated afterwards, but there will be considerably less redness for considerably less time than if you waxed, because we are not applying a hot resinous material that is ripping off live skin cells. Sugaring is more sanitary than waxing, so there’s no chance you are cross contaminating your delicate skin, with the woes of the last customer(s). Viruses and bacteria THRIVE in a wax pot, and that’s why double dipping is such a serious matter, for all skin types.

How should I prepare to be Sugared?

Your skin should be exfoliated the night before, and free of any lotions, oils, or makeup. Those products will prevent the sugar paste from adhering to your skin, and will affect your final result. Please remove all makeup and moisturizers, if at all possible, when coming in for facial sugaring. It is recommended to take Tylenol or Ibuprofen about an hour before your appointment, just to take the edge off, especially if it’s your first time. Women are considerably more sensitive in the week before their menstrual period, so keep that in mind when scheduling.

Do you charge for no shows?

We do. We are also human and understand that there are last minute scenarios that may prevent you from making your scheduled appointment. Your time is reserved for you. If you do not show, that is money lost for us, and an available appointment lost for someone that was trying to book. If you no show, you will be required to pay up front for further bookings. Our online booking website allows you to cancel an appointment with a 1 hour notice. That is a very generous window.

What body parts can be sugared?

You can have almost any body part sugared, if you have an experienced sugarist. We would not for example be able to sugar your scalp,… but we can sugar and shape your hairline. It is not advised to sugar a man’s face. Every area of hair will regrow at different speeds. Some hair growth is hormonally driven and some is not. Everyone has multiple “crops” of hair in some stage of growth, at any time. Your sugarist will help you determine a suitable schedule to remove those crops as they present, and eventually, your results will last much longer.

What are my aftercare instructions?

Unlike aftercare with waxing, we recommend that you DO NOT use drying agents like TendSkin or other products that are high in alcohol, that will dry your skin out further. After sugaring, and between appointments, you should focus on exfoliation and moisturizing. In order for the weaker hairs to easily push through the surface, your skin need to be exfoliated and moisturized. If you are prone to ingrown hairs, you may need a more aggressive exfoliant. Ask your sugarist for recommendations. Always exfoliate with a clean sponge, and DO NOT SHARE those with roommates.

Why do I need to book online?

We prefer you to book online, because it assures everyone that you have the most up to date information. You will receive a confirmation email after you book, and a reminder email or text 48 hours before your appointment. Every available appointment will be listed online, and you can book, change or cancel your appointment 24/7. It’s 2020. Technology can make life easier for most of us.
